The Runner
It was my first day in runner training, and I already screwed up. I was just getting the hang of cutting the vines when I tripped and scraped across the stone ground. My leg got cut from the knife and Minho had to help me back to the glade, now Clint was wrapping a cast on my right leg. Suddenly I heard voices outside the door.
"What happened? Why didn't you tell me sooner!!" I couldn't tell who it was. The door burst open with Newt and Minho on the other side.
"Jenny, what happened?" Newt asked, worry plastered across his face.
"I don't know, I just tripped, next thing I know I had cut my leg," the worried look increased on newt's face and I quickly added, "I'm fine though."
"See, I told you shank," Minho grunted. Newt motioned for Clint and Minho to leave and he knelt down, continuing to rap my leg.
"You sure you're ok?" He questioned again.
"Yes. Newt what are you doing? Don't you have stuff you need to do?" I asked him, confused.
"This is more important."
"What do you mean? Clint can do this," He stopped and looked at me, concern filled his eyes. Suddenly, he leaned up and kissed me. Goose bumps spread through my body. It was a long kiss, and it felt kind of nice. Without saying anything, he stood up and walked to the door. Stunned I yelled,
"Newt wait!" He turned and looked at me, but I had no words.
"I'm glad you're ok," he smiled nervously, a thing I'd never seen him do, and walked out the door.
The next day, I caught Newt watching me a few times, but he always turned away, his face all red. That evening at supper he was sitting alone so I walked over, not knowing what to expect. I barely knew him, and had no idea he liked me.
"Oh, let me help!" He helped me sit down, and we ate in an awkward silence.
"So, how's your leg?" Newt asked.
"It's ok. Clint gave me crutches, well you can see that. He said I'd have the cast for a few weeks, so no running for a while." I rambled, a little too fast.
"Does it hurt?" He looked at my cast.
"Yeah, a little. They gave me some painkillers or something, so I'm good now," his face laced with concern again and I remembered his limp. All I knew was something happened to him in the maze, before I came up.
"I'm ok though! All I did was trip. Nothing serious," I couldn't help but glance at his leg. He seemed to know what I was thinking and changed the subject.
"So, what will you do until you can run again?”
"I don't know. I would go back to the kitchen, but I can't carry anything with crutches," I sighed. we sat in silence.
"Jenny-"
"Newt-" we said at the same time.
"You first," I took another bite, forcing him to talk.
"Ok. I'm sorry, about yesterday, I-"
"Don't be!" I blurted. "I mean, it was ok," I gave him a little smile and he blushed.
"If you want, you could-" just then, Minho walked up and sat down with us; interrupting Newt.
"Hey, what cha talkin bout shanks? He said stuffing food in his mouth. When we didn't reply he asked,
"How's the leg feeling Jenny? That was quite the fall yesterday."
"I'm ok, thanks. Guess my training will have to wait," Minho ether wasn't aware of the awkwardness he brought, or he just didn't care.
I left right after I finished eating, and it wasn't until bedtime that I realized, Newt never finished what he was saying before Minho came. Everything was just so confusing, I had to know what he was going to say. I hobbled over to the homestead on my crutches, where I knew newt slept, and waited by the door for him.
"Newt!" I called out to him as he got close.
"Yeah Jen?" Jen, that was new. I kind of liked it.
"You, ah, never finished what you were saying, when Minho sat down. I was just wondering."
"Oh, it was nothing," his face flushed red and he started walking past me.
"Hold on," I grabbed his arm and he turned, "Just tell me."
"I was going to say, if you wanted to, you could follow me around tomorrow, ya know, help out," Newt looked me in the eye as he spoke. I leaned in, and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"ok," not knowing how else to reply, I turned and walked away. Tomorrow would be an adventure.
