The second chance part 2

It had been 23 days since Thomas had slipped into a coma. Newt pulled himself out of bed and to the bathroom. He sighed, splashing cold water on his face and ran a hand through his messy blond hair. He slumped down the stairs into the kitchen, where his mom sat with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. Sonya gazed at him with that same saded look in her eyes.

"Good morning sweety."

"Hey," Newt's parents hadn't been able to get more than a few words out of him since the day of the crash. He sat down with a piece of burnt toast and picked at it with a knife. Newt was depressed, plain and simple. His parents had no idea what to do. They tried to get him counseling, but he refused to go.

"Bye mom," Newt dumped his toast into the garbage and headed for the door.

"You want me to drive you Newt?" Him mom asked softly. She knew exactly where he was going.

"No thanks," Newt got in his car and pulled out of the driveway. He checked into the hospital and went straight to Thomas's room. He had about an hour before Thomas's parents came.

"Good morning Newt, I was just on my way out," Thomas's nurse smiled at him and Newt noded in reply. He pulled a chair over and sat next to His friend. He didn't say much, there was nothing to say. Newt sat and stared at Thomas's face for a long time. His brown hair neatly brushed, and his perfect pink lips slightly open. His chest rose and fell with every breath, and his eyes twitched. Hold on, his eyes twitched! Newt jumped up as Thomas flickered open his bright blue eyes.

"Tommy! Tommy you're awake!" Newt shouted.

"Did you call me Tommy?" Thomas stared at Newt.

"You're awake! Guys! Thomas is awake!" Then Newt started to laugh. He hadn't laughed so hard or for so long in 23 days. All the while, Thomas lay in bed watching Newt.

"What's so funny?" He asked, a puzzled look on his face.

"I don't know man. I can't believe You're awake," Newt mumbled and ran his hand through his hair, amazed. The doctor walked in then.

"Thomas! I'm so glad you're awake," the doctor smiled and started typing on a computer.

"Where are my parents?" Thomas asked, looking around the dull room.

"Oh! I better call them!" For the first time in 23 days Newt took out his phone.

For the next hour or so Thomas was bombarded with hugs and kiss and questions. Right when Newt thought they might get a moment alone, Thomas fell asleep. For someone who had spent the last 23 days sleeping, Thomas was one tired guy.

"He needs rest now, we'll keep him for a few days to run some tests. He should be ready to go home by Friday," the doctor concluded and left the room. Newt watched Thomas roll over in his sleep, and hope found a place in his heart once again.

Newt wasn't able to see Thomas much the next few days, but finally it was Friday and he was going home, just like the doctor predicted. Thomas sat on his bed; propped up with pillows, and Newt sat in the desk chair. They were finally alone.

"Newt, we need to talk, what you said that night-" Newt took a deep breath and interrupted Thomas, he had not been looking forward to continuing the conversation that had started everything.

"Look, I know I sound crazy. We've both had girlfriends before! But lately I've been feeling differently about you, and I don't know what's wrong with me, but I've had a long time to think about this." Finally, Newt was able to say what he'd been thinking for months. Suddenly, Thomas got up and walked over to Newt.

"You must be one blind man Newt," Thomas said, surprising Newt.

"Wha-" Thomas put his hand under Newt chin, tilted his head up, and gently placed his lips on Newt's. When they pulled apart, Newt face was red with embarrassment and surprise at what just happened.

"What was that Tommy?"

"You don't know how long I've been waiting to do that Newt," Thomas said, and waited for Him to reply. Newt sat silently for a minute before standing in front of Thomas and kissing him back.

"Newt, hold on. What about college?" Thomas said, pulling away. For the second time, Newt’s world came crashing down.

"I, I don't know Tommy. I've missed so much school, I might not even be able to graduate!"

"Oh come on Newt, you're way smarter then that, you'll catch up easy, and you know it," that made Newt blush again.

"I know. I just don't want to leave you. Not after I just got you back," Thomas pulled Newt into a fierce hug.

"Well, don't worry about that right now. We've got 23 days worth of hanging out and school work to catch up on, together," Thomas grinned.
